🏒 NO CHARGES IN ADAM JOHNSON’S DEATH — ICE HOCKEY STUNNED BY SKATE TRAGEDY
The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has confirmed that no criminal charges will be brought over the death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson, who died after a collision during a game in Sheffield. 😔
Johnson, 29, was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in October 2023 when his neck was cut by an opponent’s skate during a Challenge Cup match against the Sheffield Steelers, in front of more than 8,000 fans at the Utilita Arena. 🏟️
The opposing player, Matthew Petgrave, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and later bailed. After a full investigation, the CPS stated there was “not a realistic prospect of conviction”, and the case will not proceed to court. ⚖️
Johnson’s aunt, Kari Johnson, who watched the game via livestream alongside his father and grandmother, described the moment as a nightmare.
“We were in shock. We couldn’t believe this was happening.”
A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death as a fatal neck injury. The match was abandoned immediately, and tributes poured in at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham. 🕯️
👉 The tragedy also brought renewed attention to safety reforms in professional sports, with moves similar to those seen after major incidents in other areas, such as the aviation sector facing critical safety overhauls, when catastrophic events expose regulatory gaps. 🛡️
Following Adam Johnson’s death, the Elite Ice Hockey League mandated the use of neck guards from January 2024, aligning with international recommendations.
Johnson had previously played for teams in the US, Germany, and Sweden. He was known as a dedicated and humble athlete who “just wanted to play hockey and have fun.” ❤️
